UNCSA I.M.J Collective
A jazz small group made up of 5 of the over sixty members of the Improvised Music and Jazz studio at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. This collaboration includes two graduate students, two undergraduate students, and one high school student.
A mix of jazz standards in both traditional and non-traditional approaches, focusing on texture and group improvisational interaction. The IMJ program at UNCSA teaches musical improvisation using a linguistic and multi-genre approach, giving the students freedom to create their own unique musical languages. Every performance is different, and the music can twist and turn in unexpected directions, resulting in differing experiences for the listener at each iteration.
